This makes it great low cost alternative for deploying a variety of solutions, whether for yourself at home or in your business, or for your clients.

Suitable Applications For HP MICROSERVER

NAS - To run your HP ProLiant MicroServer as a NAS just install FreeNAS and add up to 8TB Storage, either as individual drives or in a RAID configuration for improved performance and fault tolerance. If you find the on-board Gigabit network adapter is not providing sufficient throughput you can also add an additional Gigabit network adapter (with a low profile bracket) into the spare PCIe slot and if you want to further improve performance just add some more RAM. To add more than 8TB of storage you could also use the 6 USB 2.0 Ports (4 front + 2 back) and/or the eSata Port.

 
Media Server - Although it is easier and more cost effective to buy something that was designed to work specifically as a MediaServer such as the HP EX490 MediaSmart Server, it is also possible to configure the HP ProLiant MicroServer to work as a MediaServer. With the choice of Windows Home Server (~$100) or an open-source alternative like FreeNAS with some add-ons, the HP ProLiant MicroServer is certainly up for the task. You will most likely need to add some more RAM (i.e. At least 2GB recommended) and do a bit of work to find and install the right add-ons, but with the MicroServer you will have the benefit of being able to use the hardware for something else later on if you choose to, an option generally not available with specially designed MediaServer hardware.

 
Business Server - The HP ProLiant MicroServer has sufficient processor capacity and RAM upgradeability to happily run something like Microsoft Windows Small Busines Server Essentials 2011 for a small 5-10 seat deployment. With the benefit of fault tolerance provided by the on-board RAID 1, data security and fault resistance will also not be an issue. For additional network performance you can also easily add an additional Gigabit network adapter (low profile).
